Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber has been commercially available since the 1990s, with well-known brands such as Dyneema® and Spectra®. Today, China has the biggest capacity of UHMWPE worldwide, and which is widely used in applications ranging from ropes, nets, and sails to woven fabrics, composites, and ballistics. UHMWPE is buoyant, has the highest strength of any available fiber, and demonstrates excellent resistance to UV light and many chemicals. However, it is prone to creeping under severe loads and melts at 144°C.
