Panox Fibers

Oxidized polyacrylonitrile (OXIPAN) fiber, such as ZOLTEK™ OX, is derived from a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fiber. The PAN precursor is solution spun and stabilized by processing through a high-temperature air oven to ensure its molecular structure is secure. Once stabilization is complete, a finish is applied to the OXIPAN fiber tow, which is then pleated into boxes. The OX tow can undergo further processing, including crimping and cutting, to produce staple fiber, which is then baled for shipment. Today China has developed consistent quality of oxipan with consistent supply.

Key performance features of OPAN fiber include:

– Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) values between 40% and 45%
– Exceptional flame and heat dimensional stability
– Ease of processing into yarns, woven fabrics, knits, and nonwovens
– Soft, comfortable felts and fabrics
– Electrical non-conductivity and excellent chemical resistance
– No halogens and very low toxic gas emissions upon flame exposure

OXIPAN fiber is produced from carbon filament tow and can be crimped and cut into various staple lengths. It is available in three denier sizes (1.7 dtex, 2.2 dtex, and 5.0 dtex) and different length from 38mm-100mm, with the LOI value dependent on fiber density. In addition to providing outstanding protection against direct flame, OXIPAN fiber products exhibit low thermal conductivity, making them excellent thermal insulators.
